WENDY ARROWSMITH Wednesday 20th July 2016

wendy_arrowsmith

WENDY ARROWSMITH was brought up in Scotland but travelled extensively before settling in North Yorkshire with her family. She started writing songs ten years ago which have been recorded on Ship of Fools and Life Love and Chocolate but always includes interpretations of traditional songs in her live sets. This will be her third visit to our club since early in 2011. Wendy plays guitar to accompany her songs but its her voice that can stop you in your tracks. She has won an award for a song every year since 2007 at different festivals.

John Conolly Wednesday 15 July 2015

jc
Our guest this Wednesday 15 July is John Conolly who so enjoyed his gig with us 3 years ago that he wanted Carrington as the closing date on his countrywide 15 day tour.

John is best known for composing ‘Fiddlers Green’ when barely out of college, but in the last 45 years he has written dozens of songs, many humorous, although no others have been mistakenly called traditional. He accompanies himself on guitar or his trusty melodeon and is sure to give us a great night. Members can come in for £3, whilst entry for anyone else is £5, and we aim to start at 8.30pm so we can finish by 11.15 as requested by our landlord, and clear the room by 11.25pm.

We remain open every Wednesday over the summer then our guests for the next 3 months are: –

16 September – BOB FOX singer from Co Durham who’s just finished as Songman in ‘War Horse’.

30 September – JONATHAN JONES – home grown interpreter of James Taylor and Mark Knofler.

21 October – DOUG EUNSON & SARAH MATTHEWS – ex Cross o’the Hands and most of Cupola.

Hope to see you this Wednesday 15 July at 8.30pm.

Stanley Accrington Wednesday 10 December 2014

Stanley (not his real name) is a songwriter who puts modern words to traditional tunes, some of which are pastiches or parodies. Some of his songs are humorous, others make a serious observational or political point. The song about the 3 Wise Women is particularly seasonal.

We hope he will also be playing live and talking on BBC Radio Nottingham at 6.15pm on Wednesday ahead of his performance but rather than just listen – see him live at 8.30pm.

LES BARKER Wednesday 17th September 2014

Our next guests GREG RUSSELL and CIARON ALGAR appear on Wednesday 18 June from 8.30pm. They come from Cheshire and North Staffordshire and have been a duo since 2011. After a great performance last year (YouTube), they were asked to return to Southwell Folk Festival this year although other festival bookings meant they only appeared on Friday.

Greg is main vocalist and plays guitar or concertina whilst Ciaran plays fiddle and both play bouzouki. They won the Heritage prize at 2014 BBC Folk Awards following their Young Folk award in 2013 and have had great reviews for their live performances.

It will be only £4 for members and £6 for anyone else and we will ensure the guests come on by 9.15 and are able to play two 40 minute sets.

Do renew membership if yours has expired, as £9 on the night will result in free entry to singers/musicians nights and discounts of at least £2 on guest nights until 18 June 2015.

This Wednesday 11 June we hope to approve the committee members to enable the Club to go from strength to strength as Gren begins to wind down his responsibilities after 32 years.

JESS MORGAN Wednesday 21st May 2014

She comes from Norwich, and was introduced by Mark Radcliffe on the Radio 2 folk show as a “dynamic new singer-songwriter” playing a track from her new album ‘Langa Langa’.

Her songs tell stories which she accompanies with clawhammer-like guitar playing, but it was her unique voice that made a great impression at Southwell Folk Festival last summer and she asked to have a date to fit in her tour when her new album was released.

The Guardian has called it “Gorgeous country folk” and it’s your chance to see if their reviewer is right if you can make it to the club at 8.30 on Wednesday.

It is only £3 for members and £5 for anyone else although £8 on the night will result in you having membership until the end of May 2015.
