Jez Lowe Wednesday 18 January 2023

Jez Lowe

Every 3 or 4 years we book Jez Lowe because he consistently gives
us an entertaining night with self-penned material sung to guitar or
cittern. His Durham roots come across in most of his songs and he’s
received many nominations in both Sony Awards & BBC Folk Awards.
There is a link to our last guest Johnny Campbell as Jez interviews
him on Radio 4 ‘Open Country’ this week. Jez has just finished a tour
with his group ‘The Bad Pennies’ and has also been touring with The
Pitmen Poets. His other collaboration at Gate to Southwell Festival
last summer was with Steve Tilston, but for us he’ll be solo and
selling his latest CD ‘Crazy Pagan’.

Johnny Campbell Wednesday 14 December 2022

Johnny Campbell

Every so often a young singer comes along with fire and ambition
to prove that traditional and self-penned material sung to guitar
can stir audiences. Johnny has been writing and delving deep into
northern English folk song and story since 2015, releasing 3
albums and earning a formidable reputation, as you will see from
the following quotes: –
The spirit of the folk clubs in their heyday runs in his veins.

I defy anyone not to be galvanised by the total integrity of his
exceptional rendition of Ewan MacColl’s Moving on Song.
The Living Tradition

Like a modern-day Billy Bragg, he’s all about the fight.

Winter Wilson

They are a duo from Sleaford in Lincolnshire who we last had 4
years ago with a very good performance. They have also been
true friends of Gate to Southwell Festival appearing most years
on most stages. They bring a sense of intimacy blending superb
songs, stunning harmonies and musicianship with hilarious
humour and tales of life on the road.

Kip (vocals, accordion, guitar, flute) “simply has a voice to die
for” whilst Dave Wilson (vocals, guitar and banjo) is recognised
as being in the top tier of British songwriters.

Admission is £10.00 for non-members and £8.00 for members. Please
